Understanding the "Bid Strategy Limited" Warning in Google Ads

Updated: Apr 7

If you’re running campaigns in Google Ads, you may have seen a warning message that reads “X% of impressions are limited by your max. bid limit”. This message can be a bit confusing, so let’s break it down.

In theory, this message means that your maximum bid limit for your campaign or ad group is being reached by multiple keywords or targeting methods. Essentially, your bids are not high enough to effectively compete for ad placement and win auctions.

While the message may suggest that you need to increase your maximum bid limit to improve your chances of showing your ads more frequently, this may not always be the best solution. Simply increasing your maximum bid limit may not necessarily result in increased impressions or clicks for your campaign. It's possible that your competitors are also bidding aggressively for the same keywords, or your targeting and ad creatives may not be effectively reaching your intended audience.

So, how should you tackle this warning?

First, try raising your bid in small increments, like 10 to 20%. After collecting enough data, if you notice that you received higher impressions for your campaign and you still see the "bid strategy limited" message, try to increase the bid another 10%.

But if you don’t see higher impressions in your campaign after raising the bid and you notice that only CPCs have increased, I wouldn’t recommend raising the bid anymore. In fact, you can reduce it to the previous level to reduce the cost per click.

It's important to note that you should not blindly follow this warning message and increase your maximum bid limit without considering other factors that may be impacting your campaign's performance. Always monitor your campaign's performance and adjust your bidding strategy accordingly.

In conclusion, the "Bid Strategy Limited" warning message is an important indicator of your campaign's bidding performance, but it shouldn't be the only factor you consider when optimizing your campaigns. Remember to analyze your data, test different bidding strategies, and make adjustments accordingly to achieve the best results for your Google Ads campaigns.
